Motivation for the Native American Student:
I feel that Native American students need the cultural stimulation of their background inorder to help motivate them. This is why I am attempting to adapt the working of the tools in the shop and the projects made to be relevent the the native cultures.
On this page I'm making reference to the lathe. I have searched the web for ideas on the projects that have been chosen. These projects are pertonant to most every tribe. Though they have been hand made in the past through carving, I want the student to use the tools of today and the technology of today. To have the students buy into the program I'm intergrating the use of cultural arts. I think that it will be a successful program once all re-organization is complete.
The Projects Themselves:
The flute is done by turning a piece of hardwood on the bench and to about 2-1/2" in dia.. Sand out the piece and horizontally drill a 3/8" hole down the center of the wood long ways. Drill 6 holes the same size down through the top of it , with a 7th hole near the end the be used for the wissle. After this the finish is and final details are up to the indiviual.

The bowls can be laminated from different woods of different colors. This will give it a native look. Also the bowls can be finished in native fashion with the traditional designs.

The drum can be turned on the lathe as a deep bowl. Once you have turned out the bowl (the has been laminated with different woods)it's all a matter of streching a piece of hide over it. Using paints and dye you can create images of cultural tradition.
