NITI Star Parent Web Page Workshop

 

 

1.  Create an e-mail address at Yahoo.com for use during this workshop.

A.    Go to http://www.yahoo.com

B.     Press the email link and sign in. This will take a few minutes. No need to include any information that is optional.

C.    When signing in, use a user identification that others probably have not already used. For example, my address is roessel_k@yahoo.com. You might use an address that includes your full name, or underlines.

      When you are done, click on the Compose option and send me email roessel_k@yahoo.com and sign your full name to your note.

 

2.  What is web page? How does it work? What kind of page will we be

      making?

            Preparing for making your page.

A.    Go to Netscape Communicator on your desktop.

B.     Next, click on the Communicator menu option at the top of the page and click on the Composer button.

C.    Use this Communicator button to move between Netscape Navigator and Netscape Composer.

 

3.  Create a folder on Windows or Macintosh where you will keep all your

       work.

A.    In your folder, make sure all your filenames are short, and one word.

        

4.  MAKING THE PARENT PAGE:

Composer is a WYSIWYG program (What you see is what you get). In fact, it works very much like a word processor, such as Microsoft Word.

A.    Open Composer by going to Netscape, clicking on “Communicator” at the top of the screen, and clicking on “Composer” on the pull down menu. You should see a clear screen.

B.     Type, “Welcome to (your schools’ name) Parent Page, OR type, “(your first name)’s Parent Page,” and highlight it.  Ex:  Karina’s Parent Page

C.    Make it font size 24 by using the pull down menu (the one with the 12 point font showing).

D.   Keep it highlighted and make the type bold by clicking on the bold (FIRST“A”). Italicize the type by clicking on the italicized (SECOND “A”). Now Underline it. Then with the title still highlighted, center it by using the centering  tool on the menu bar (the last on the line).

E.    Remember to click on the bold and italicized buttons again to undo the commands.

F.     Press Enter/Return twice on the keyboard to give yourself a little room to type.

 

NOTE: SAVE YOUR WORK OFTEN. COMPUTER DOES FREEZE UP!


 

5.  BRING A PICTURE INTO YOUR WEBPAGE:

            A. Click on Communicator at the top of the screen and click on Navigator

            B.  Go to the following URL in Netscape.

         At the http:// prompt type the following:

                  www.hipopl.org/dept/library/safety_net.htm

            C. Locate the picture of the kids surrounding the globe.

D.   Click on the globe with the right mouse button and go down to the “save

      Image as” option

E.    Save the picture in your file directory you made earlier and press save.

F.     Go back to Communicator and click on Composer. Click on “Image”(the little square picture on the menu bar). You will get a dialogue box with some options.

 

a.      Click on “choose file” and find your folder where you saved the picture. Press on open.

b.      Important: erase all the information before the name of the file. (file:///C|…)

c.      Click OK.

d.     Now center the picture.

e.      Press Enter/Return twice

     

6.  TYPE TEXT INTO YOUR WEBPAGE:

A.    “Window Rock High School (WRHS) is located on the Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona. The school is located 5 miles from the Navajo Nation capitol of Window Rock, Arizona. Our mission is to provide educational and parental resources to other parents in order to assist their children to succeed in school.”

B.      Highlight the text and italicize the text by clicking on the SECOND “A”. 

C.    Click on italicize button to undo command.

D.   Press Enter/Return twice.

E.    Next, type the following information in the order below.

            a. Type Contact Address: first. Highlight Contact Address and bold                              it. Make it font size 14.

            b. Hit enter or return twice after you enter Contact Address.

            c. Next, go to the format option; go to List, and then to Bulleted.

            d. Next, type P.O. Box 559 and a bullet will appear before P.O.

e. When you hit return, another bullet will appear. Type the rest of the

            text. A bullet should appear before each entry, see example below.

                        Contact Address:

                       

·        P.O Box 559

·        (Type your school’s town, state, and zip)

·        Telephone: (520)111-0000

·        Fax: (520) 112-0100

·        District Name: (Type your schools district name)

f.       Press enter after inputting district name.

g.      Go back to the format option and click on List/Bulleted to turn off the bullets.

h.     Highlight the text, make into 18 font, and align left the text.           

      F. Save the page using your e-mail name (do not include the @yahoo.com part of 

           your e-mail name.

      G.Click on the File menu option and move down to save as.

a.      Macintosh users, add the extension .html to your file.

 

7.  TO CREATE A BACKGROUND, go to the following web page in Navigator.

At the http:// prompt type the following: members.xoom.com/heidihyper/bgindex.html

a.      Find a background for your web page.

b.      Just as you did with the previous picture, right-click on a background and save it to your folder.

c.      Return to Composer.

d.     Next, go to the format menu, then to Page Colors and Properties option. Then, in the Use Image box, type the name of the file, or click Choose File, find your folder, click on the name of the file, click OPEN, and finally OK.

e.      A background image is simply a small picture repeated until the page is filled.

f.       Finally, create a breaking line on your page by clicking on the “H. Line” option. Double-click on the line and in the width box, put in 50(for 50 percent of the page).

g.      Press Enter or Return twice.

h.     PLEASE SAVE YOUR WORK OFTEN. COMPUTERS DO FREEZE UP.

 

8.  LET US CREATE A TABLE:

A.    Next, type, Staff Directory. Highlight the text, bold and center the text and make the font size 18.

B.     Press Enter/Return twice.

C.    Click on the Table button at the top of your screen (the icon with the boxes). Let us built a table with 4 rows and 4 columns. Center the table.  Click on the Border Line Width box for a border around the table. Type in 5 pixels for border. Take the check off the equal column width. Click on ok to close table options.

D.   Starting with the left column type in the following text. Use the TAB key located on the left side of the keyboard to tab between the columns.

E.    Make sure the titles of the columns are in bold. Example: NAME, POSITION, ETC.

F.     To size the table, click on the table and wait for the left/right arrows to appear before sizing the table.

G.   Press Enter or Return twice.

 

9.  NOW LET US COPY SOME INFORMATION ON YOUR PAGE.

A.    In Netscape Navigator, go to the Dine Commandments:

               At the http:// prompt type the following:

               www.niti.org/users/theresa/commandments.html

B.     Next highlight all the text or click on Edit/Select All. Press the Edit command and click on copy.

C.    Go back to Composer and go to Edit/Paste and paste the text on the left side of your web page.

D.   Highlight the Dine Commandments and click on Format/Color and pick a color for the ext.

E.    Press Enter or Return twice.

 

10.  HOW TO LINK YOUR WEB PAGE TO DIFFERENT SITES.

 

Let’s say you found parent resource links you would like to share with other parents. Well let’s try linking!

 

A.    Type in the following to your web “Parent Resources” page.  Make this font size 24, make it bold and italicized.  Center this as it will be a title for the following links.

           

B.     Press enter or return twice.

C.    Type  Websites for Kids and Adults Who Care for Them.”

D.   Now highlight this text and click on the button Link (the chain at the top of the page). In the “Link to”, type in the URL

a.      http://www.ala.org/parentspage/greatsites 

E.    Type another subject “A Guideline for Parents with Kids on the Web.”

F.     Now highlight this text and click on the button Link (the chain at the top of the page). In the “Link to”, type in the URL

a.      http://www.familyplay.com

G.   Check to make sure your links work by pressing the PREVIEW button.

H.   Press Enter or Return twice.

 

  

 

11.  E-MAILING OTHER PARENTS.

If you want to setup a command which makes it easy for other parents to send you e-mail, use the “mailto” command with “ a href”.

 

A.    First, instead of using text to set the hot link, use a fun GIF file.

B.     Go to the following page: http://numa.niti.org/ani.htm

C.    Scroll down and take the little moving mail icon.

D.   Save it in your folder where your work is now being saved.

E.    Return to Composer and click on Image. Click on “choose file” and find your folder where you saved the mail icon.

F.     Important: erase all the information before the name of the file (file:///C|…). Click ok.

G.   Insert the picture onto your page, center it, and click on it. You will see a black box around the picture.

H.   Click on the link button and in the “Link to” box, type mailto: your e-mail address (your e-mail address). Click ok to close.

I.       Any picture you put on your web page can be linked in this way.

J.      Next type “Mail me if you have any questions or concerns”. Make the font into a smaller 10-point font and center it.

K.    Check to make sure your links work by pressing the PREVIEW button.

  

   12.  Send your web page to theresa_true@yahoo.com as an attachment.
